An Evolving Vision

This week I began to take on a significant project: clarifying the role of science in my investigation of subjective experience. I wrote a few things in the past that I anticipated being able to whip into shape for the current purpose, but found the task is asking much more of me.

Feeling lies at a nexus point for our entire civilization. It is impossible to speak clearly about feeling without touching on every other dimension of culture and humanity. Moving into a disciplined investigation of feeling requires a reckoning with these many layers, and so I am feeling called to dig more deeply into this territory than I have in the past.

Outlining a new science of the feeling mind will require delving into core philosophies of being, knowing, and doing. Feeling is intimately integrated throughout all of human experience, and there is no getting around touching on all human experience when attempting to move forward in our understanding and agency around feeling.

This site is my container for working all this out, for refining my message, clarifying my intentions, developing my relationships. And it’s working. Already things are changing, deepening in a way I hadn’t anticipated. I am appreciating that I have begun and committed to this project without the end in sight. I am committed to continuing to move forward, but not committed to a specific outcome, only that the work progresses.

In digging into the question of how to present science I connected more with my deeper motivations for offering this website as a whole. I’d like to articulate more clearly what I am up to, and what I intend to create here over time. Here’s what I’ve worked out this afternoon, my evolving message/strategy/intention:

1. Name the problem we’re all struggling with: Escalating inner distress and outer disruption of all kinds, with decreasing sense of agency and power to respond.

2. Name my diagnosis: We are stuck at a developmental threshold. Our awareness and control of the external world has skyrocketed without a corresponding increase in our awareness and control of the inner world. Specifically, we are unaware of the central role of feeling in consciousness, and incapable of engaging feeling productively. The feeling mind is invisible to us. In our ignorance we engage in civilization-wide practices which distort its massive power into a destructive force.

3. Explain my diagnosis: Introduce my discoveries about the feeling mind. Present the new science supporting these discoveries and the revised understanding of human nature that emerges from them.

4. Educate how to reverse the impact of these destructive forces, how to liberate the deep wisdom and power of the feeling mind, and how to step across this developmental threshold to activate our freedom and agency as fully whole, fully conscious beings.

5. Outline my vision of a future made possible by placing feeling at the center of human activity.

Reading through these five points gives me a sense of clarity and completeness. I like where this is going. I feel strongly motivated to complete these five tasks in many forms over the coming months. Right now, though, my article categories don’t match up one-to-one with these five points. It’s clear that The Science covers point #3, and Feelingwork covers point #4. Commentary covers the first two quite well. But I’ll need to add another category specifically for point #5, perhaps calling it The Vision. It’s clear to me that this will be an important component of the message to highlight with its own label.

Already this decision is affecting me. I feel an energy activating with the vision of articles acting as counterpoint to those identifying what’s wrong, pointing in the direction of what is possible. Having this new category motivates me to fill it by thinking forward into that desired future and painting the vision well. I anticipate that having this attractor will encourage me to feed it, with good energy feeding back into all the rest of my being.

I like it.

Want to participate in conversations about the feeling mind? Over the coming year (2019), depending on interest, I’ll be I’ll be hosting live, group calls where we can go much deeper into the material and practice the skills. If you think you might be interested, please reach out to me.
